I have occasionally been asked to photograph for others and once the files have been finished they are saved to a "Client Collection" and then with one click Adobe lets you create an online web gallery that you can password protect and share the link to whomever. Today's photos would be: 20181228 Stafford's Crooked LodgeĮach of these folders is inside the main folder named 2018 which is inside the master library folder I have established an individual folder naming routine for each day of shooting I do.Įxample from Christmas Day at home is: 20181225 Christmas Family Inside that folder I have subfolders by year. I keep my entire photo library inside one folder on an external drive. Lightroom allows the user to have complete control of that aspect. The most important part of DAM is where the files are actually kept. I have a workflow that I don't want to change from the time I ingest the DNG's that my camera makes, to all the other presets I've created from file name changes, develop presets, export presets, etc. Not sure about all the other companies out there but I'd say that Capture One will be around for a while. I do not mind the subscription method as I want the latest updates that have over time improved editing process for my "work" hobby.Īs I'm writing this reply I realized one of the reasons I want to stay with Adobe Lightroom is I don't think they will be going away too soon. I have tried a couple other methods of cataloging and editing my files but have stuck with Lightroom. About the same time I purchased a new camera that included a copy of Lightroom. I switched to Lightroom a few years ago once Apple decided to stop supporting Aperture. It makes no sense to me since photoshop will have to use its own RAW editor erasing my capture one edits with DNG. DNG would be fine too if you don't use a intermediate step like I do with capture one. Certainly don't use anything 8bit and that includes JPG. I use lossless 16bit TIFFs for when I have to use photoshop. The RAW editing side is as good (or better) as Lightroom. Still not perfect but the closest thing to lightroom I've encountered. They have a DAM similar to lightroom that has improved overtime.
I gave up adobe when they went in to a subscription service and switched to CaptureOne. Lastly, as an aside - when most people do editing of a Raw file in an external program (such that the edits are not saved in the catalog), what format do you typically send the edited image back to your DAM in? Tiff? DNG? JPEG? I could use any editor I liked or switch going forward? Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts based on their experience. Mylio on the other hand would allow me to pick my cloud storage (or vaults) and would not tie me into a specific editor.

Obviously, Lightroom would tie me into their ecosystem and Lightroom CC, while improving, is not as full featured as the Classic version. Two options are Lightroom CC (the version with the 1TB of storage) and Mylio. Seems the universe of programs capable of this is rather small. With that said, I want to keep a solution that syncs to all my computers and iOS devices (iPhone/iPad). I have been using Apple Photos but am leaning toward moving my Mirrorless Raw files to a separate program and just keep Photos for my iPhone pictures. Looking to pick a new DAM for my workflow.
